Religious Tolerance
09.13.04 (9:08 am)   [edit]

Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light.

~Helen Keller

My Love fears that I may have lost my faith.  I haven’t lost it, just maybe set it aside to examine it better.  As I have mentioned before, I am on a spiritual quest.  I am reading books on the sacred feminine, the goddesses, and the ancient cultures that worshipped them.  I am also reading a book about Mary Magdalene and how she was not the whore that the early church painted her out to be.  Why is it people follow certain teachings because the bible tells them to?  Why is it that these same people think it is ok to condemn those who do not follow the bible?  Personally, I do believe there is a God or a higher power, but I do not try to pretend to know who it is, or what they want.  I guess I look at it more as a power controlling our fate so that we reach our destiny.  If your destiny is to follow the bible and be a good person, fine, you do that, but don’t get in my face telling me to change and be like you.  Respect my values and beliefs, as I respect yours.  And remember, Jesus was a man who defied all conventions.  He went against the grain, and questioned the powers that be.  Many said that he was a crazy man, a blasphemer.  But, this is the same man that people say will keep us out of heaven if we do not follow his teachings.

This is all the same argument I have made before, but where does it get me?  Nowhere.  So, I am now going to focus on practicing what I preach.  I have always been a big believer in treat others as I want to be treated.  But, I have trouble with judging people too quickly.  I will work on this as I continue learning.  Do I want to be saved?  No, I just want to explore with out any interference.  Some of my Love’s friends like to poke fun at me, calling me a witch and what not.  That doesn’t bother me.  I don’t care much for labels.  I will even half jokingly tell them that a witch is the last person you want to mock.  J  I look at the celebrities who have embraced Kabala or Scientology and part of me feels for them.  I mean after all aren’t they just looking for answers to questions that the majority of society is afraid to ask?  They are accused of being a part of a cult, and they are ridiculed for being “weird”.  I may not agree with what they practice and preach, but I respect them for sticking up for what they believe in.  Wouldn’t it be a much more peaceful world if we allowed the freedom of religion that we fight so hard for?  There are programs in place all over to raise awareness for so many causes out there:  AIDS, Breast Cancer, Gay Rights, Women’s Rights, Children’s Rights, Senior Rights.  Where is the Religious Tolerance Awareness program?  I’m sure it is out there, it just can’t be heard over the all of the noise it’s opponents are making. Religious tolerance does not mean that we tolerate the major religions telling us what is acceptable and what is not.  It means that we respect all religious beliefs.

I'm an atheist, and I get sick of people telling me that I'm crazy, communistic, evil, a secular humanist, blind, dead to God, close-minded and amoral.

Re: TigerLilly

"alot of christians dont behave in a very...christian was"

I assume you mean "christian way" here, right? And I'm also assuming that you're equating the "christian way" with some obscure sense of glorious morality, as that's what it's normally equated with by Christians. So by saying they do not behave in a Christian way (remember, the Christian way being the moral way), you're equating non-Christians with being immoral.

I'm sure that's not what you meant as you say you like this post (which I do as well) but that's what you essentially said, assuming my assumptions are correct, and it is grossly inaccurate. In my personal experience atheists are generally slower to judge than Christians, ironically it's Christians who are not supposed to judge as it's God's right only, because they have been judged against for their religious beliefs.

Now please do not get me wrong and think I'm just hating on Christians. I'm not. As an atheist, I personally disagree with many Christian teachings and the institution of religion, but I do believe some Christian teachings are viable.

Interesting post, Jennluna. Keep exploring your spirituality. Despite what many say, the possibilities are endless.

wow forgive my typing mistakes please!...
I speak from personal experiance only. I am not a Christian or an atheist. Altho I have had dealings with very religious people who , in my view are really nasty and unforgiving. Some Christian veiws ARE...great I agree with that. I think maybe you got the wrong end of the stick...or maybe I didnt explain well enough. What ever your tone was very...patronising. I hope you didnt feel I was...being condisending:)

I understand what you were trying to say, as the majority of my family is VERY christian. "the christian way" is something they themselves have set up and supposedly adhere to. To be a "good christian" is suppose to mean to show love and compassion, to not judge, to be the light of Jesus to the world. I think your point was that many of those "good christians" are the ones throwing hate and judgement around more than anyone else... or at least close to that point. In theory, christianity is a beautiful thing.. unfortunately the practice of it doesn't always go that way... just like in any religion.

you're an evil satan worshipper. Its because of people like you that God has turned his back on our Great country, and allowed 911 to happen. The world must rid itself of scum like yourself in order to avoid another disaster of that sort. God wills it

My apologies... it wasn't meant to be patronizing. It's just that I feel that whenver I hear the phrase "the Christian way" as being the "right way" it just helps to drive the totally unbased and incorrect sense that all atheists and non-believers are immoral.

My attitude wasn't condescending, it was just in defense of an age old inaccuracy that makes my life difficult at times.

Mistykalrain -- yes, in theory much of Christianity is a wonderful thing... but like all systems of power it gets used to gain control when it most certainly should not be.

Whoever newbie is, shut up you hypocrite. This person's just proving my point that many religious people who claim to be pure in the sense of their particular religion really go against a lot of what their holy book tells them...

i tend to agree, there are some very valuable lessons in the Christian teachings, however, the bible is a book written by men for men. and to take that book and degrade, humiliate and persecute those who don't follow it is just wrong. thanks also for the encouragement to explore my spirituality. there are endless possibilities and contrary to popular opinion, spirituality does not equal religion. :)

exactly my point. many do not practice what they preach, however, i have found that the majority of judgement comes from 'Christians', in my personal experience anyway.
